How To Prepare Your Child For Preschool

It’s hard to believe that your little one is already old enough for preschool! While it’s a big milestone, transitioning your child into a new environment can be daunting for both of you. Here are a few tips to help your child—and you—successfully adjust to this new phase of life Primus international preschool Singapore.

  • Talk about preschool in positive terms=. Children often take their cues from their parents, so it’s important to frame preschool in a positive light. If you’re feeling anxious or sad about your child going to preschool, try your best to keep those emotions in check around them. Instead, focus on the excitement of this new adventure and all the cool things they’ll get to do and learn. 
  • Visit the school together – Schedule a time to tour the preschool with your child a few weeks before school starts. This will help them feel more comfortable on their first day as they won’t be walking into an unfamiliar place. During the visit, point out the things they’ll be doing every day, such as playing on the playground or singing songs in circle time. 
  • Role-play different scenarios= Once you’ve toured the school together, start practicing what daily activities will be like using pretend play at home. You can be the teacher and act out different parts of the day, such as drop-off and pick-up, nap time, and snack time. This will help ease any fears your child might have and give them a sense of what to expect come school time. 
  • Pack their backpack together – A few days before preschool starts, sit down with your child and help them pack their backpack with all the things they’ll need for a successful day of learning, such as extra clothes, diapers (if necessary), and sunscreen (if outdoor activities are planned). Let them have a sense of control by allowing them to choose which items go in their backpack too. 
  • Establish a daily routine leading up to school starting= Routines are comforting for children (and adults!), so having one in place leading up to the first day of school will help reduce stress for everyone involved. Wake up at the same time each morning, eat breakfast together, brush your teeth, get dressed—you get the idea!—and then include some fun activities, too, such as reading stories or playing outside before it’s time to leave for school.


Starting preschool is a huge milestone for both you and your child! By following these tips, you can help ease any anxiety they (or you) might be feeling and set them up for success come their first day of class!
